Makeup expiration dates: What you need to know

Makeup is an important part of many individuals’ daily routine, and with so many products being released to the world every week, there is so much to choose from. But do you know your makeup expiry dates and when you should be replacing the old with the new?

Acknowledging the fact that you may have to throw out your favourite highlighter or eyeliner because it is out of date can be hard to face, but there are many reasons why you should. Infections, rashes and break-outs can all be a result of not replacing your essentials, so it is definitely worth getting to know what’s in your make-up bag.

Identifying expiration dates

Expiration dates on makeup products can be found on the back of the packaging and be identified by a symbol of a makeup pot and a number inside of it. This signifies the Period After Opening (PAO), with the number indicated being the months before expiration. Of course, not all makeup is the same, especially as organic-based products, such as those used in Yorkshire spa hotels, are becoming more popular with natural ingredients being included.

Below is a list of the average expiration dates for the most common beauty products:

Foundation

Depending on the type of foundation product you use, it can last up to 24 months if stored correctly. Heavy duty foundations will last the duration, however organic foundations with natural ingredients have hardly any preservatives in them, making them last for only six months before you need to replace them.

Mascara

Your mascara should be replaced every three months to avoid infections such as conjunctivitis. Mascara also develops a clumpy consistency if it has been left for a long amount of time, which can make it harder to execute perfect looking eyelashes.

Lipstick

Lipstick can harbour bacteria more than any other beauty product, so it is important to update your colourful pout every 12-24 months. If you see a change in colour or texture to your lipstick, this is a definite indication to throw it in the bin!
